How to Write a YouTube Video Description That Works

By Viralora · Updated October 2026

Many creators upload a great video and leave the description empty or filled with random tags. A good description helps viewers understand your video, helps YouTube understand the topic, and gives people a reason to keep watching your channel. It does not need to be long or clever. It needs to be clear and honest.

1. Put the most important words in the first two lines

Viewers see only the first lines of a description before they click to show more, and search results also show a short part of it. Use those lines to say what the video is about and what the viewer will learn, in natural sentences.

2. Use your main keyword naturally

Think about what a person would type to find your video, such as "how to write a short film script". Use that phrase once near the start and a few times in the rest of the description where it fits naturally. Repeating a keyword again and again looks spammy and does not help.

3. Write a short summary of the video

After the first lines, write two or three short paragraphs about the video: the problem, the steps you cover, and who it is for. This gives YouTube more context and helps viewers who read before they watch.

4. Add timestamps

Timestamps let viewers jump to the part they need and make long videos easier to use. Write the first timestamp as 0:00 and add a short label for each section. Keep the labels clear, such as "0:00 Intro" and "1:30 Choosing a topic".

5. Add useful links

Link to related videos, a playlist, your other social pages or your website. Put the most important link near the top. Only link to things that help the viewer, and make clear what each link is.

6. Use a few relevant hashtags

Add two or three hashtags that truly describe the video. Do not add a long list of unrelated tags. Too many hashtags look like spam, and YouTube may ignore them.

7. Add a simple call to action

Tell viewers what to do next in one friendly line: watch the next video, subscribe, or leave a comment with a question. One clear request works better than five.

8. Be honest and do not mislead

Do not put unrelated keywords or famous names in the description to attract clicks. Misleading metadata breaks YouTube's rules and makes viewers leave quickly, which hurts your video in the long run.

9. Use a template to save time

Here is a simple structure you can copy and fill in for each video:

[One sentence that says what the video covers and who it is for.]

[Two or three sentences with more detail and your main keyword.]

Timestamps:
0:00 Intro
0:45 First point
2:10 Second point

Watch next: [link to a related video]
Follow me: [link to your Instagram or website]

#Hashtag1 #Hashtag2 #Hashtag3

10. Update old descriptions

If an older video is getting views, improve its description with a better first line, timestamps and links to your newer videos. Small updates like this are easy and can help a video keep bringing in viewers.

A note from me

I run the YouTube channel Venkatasaiyadav Cinematic Universe, where I share short films, and I built Viralora to make jobs like writing titles, captions and descriptions faster. Use a template like the one above so you never face a blank box again, then add your own details.
