YouTube Monetization Requirements: A Plain Guide for 2026
Many new creators ask the same question: how many subscribers and watch hours do I need before I can earn money on YouTube? The answer depends on which type of earning you mean, and YouTube has changed the rules before and is changing them again. This guide explains the requirements as they stood in October 2026. Because these rules can change, always confirm the numbers on YouTube's official Help pages and in the Earn tab of YouTube Studio before you plan around them.
1. Two levels of the YouTube Partner Program
YouTube Partner Program, often called YPP, is the program that lets creators earn from YouTube. It currently has two levels.
Level one needs 500 subscribers, at least 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days. This level unlocks fan funding features such as channel memberships, Super Chat and shopping, where those are available.
Level two needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days. This level unlocks ad revenue and a share of YouTube Premium revenue.
2. A change announced for 2027
In August 2026, YouTube announced that from February 1, 2027, new creators who apply for ad revenue will need 8,000 public watch hours, up from 4,000, or 20 million Shorts views, up from 10 million. The 1,000 subscriber requirement stays the same. If you are close to the current numbers, check the official page to see exactly how this affects your application date.
3. What counts as watch hours
Only watch time on public videos counts. Private or deleted videos do not. Watch hours from Shorts do not count towards the long-form watch hour requirement. Shorts views are a separate path, and you need to meet one path completely. Hours and Shorts views are not added together.
4. Other requirements
Subscriber and watch numbers are not enough on their own. Your channel must follow YouTube's channel monetization policies and community guidelines, you need 2-step verification turned on for your Google account, and you need to link an AdSense account to receive payments. The program is also not open in every country, so check whether it is available where you live.
5. Original content matters
YouTube does not pay for content that is mass produced, repetitive or copied from other creators. Use your own footage, voice and ideas. If you use music, clips or images from others, make sure you have the right to use them. Repeated copyright problems can put your channel at risk.
6. How to apply
Open YouTube Studio and go to the Earn tab. You will see a progress bar that shows your subscribers, watch hours and Shorts views. When you meet a level, you can apply. YouTube then reviews your channel against its policies, which can take some time. If you are rejected, you can usually apply again later after improving your channel.
7. How to build watch time honestly
Make videos people want to watch to the end. Open with the most interesting part, keep the pace tight, and remove parts that drag. Group related videos in playlists so viewers keep watching, and use end screens to point to your next video. A series on one topic often builds watch time faster than random videos.
8. Avoid shortcuts
Buying subscribers, buying watch hours or joining sub-for-sub groups breaks YouTube's rules. These can get your channel rejected or removed, and the viewers they bring never really watch your content. Slow and real growth is safer.
9. Earn in other ways while you grow
You do not have to wait for YPP to earn something from your audience. Some creators work with brands or promote products as affiliates. If you do, be honest with your viewers and say clearly when a video is sponsored or includes affiliate links.
A note from me
I run the YouTube channel Venkatasaiyadav Cinematic Universe, where I share short films, and I am working towards monetisation on my own channel. I wrote this guide to keep the rules clear for creators in the same position. Always check YouTube's official pages for the latest numbers before you plan.
